What is the CARDIAC Kids Program?
CARDIAC is a cardiovascular screening program aimed at identifying both children and their parents who have abnormal cholesterol levels, as well as other cardiovascular disease risk factors. Each student is invited to take part in the screening. A family history and permission form are filled out by the parents. The screening process includes a measurement of blood pressure, height, weight and Acanthosis Nigricans (Diabetes Screen). Participants are also eligible for a blood cholesterol screening.
Early identification of children with risk factors for heart disease provides the opportunity to work with the child’s family to reduce their risk.
CARDIAC identifies those with Familial Hypercholesterolemia
Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a serious inherited disorder that causes cholesterol values to be greatly elevated. One in every 250-500 people have FH. Because FH is an inherited disorder, anyone with a family history of heart disease is at risk for FH and should be tested. FH may cause premature death from heart disease in middle-aged adults.
CARDIAC Interventions: Healthy Hearts
Healthy Hearts is a web-based health curriculum for 10-13 year olds used by teachers to help children learn about cardiovascular health and the importance of physical activity, good nutrition and tobacco avoidance for maintaining a healthy body. The student’s school must enroll them to participate in Healthy Hearts.
